News: NCL’s Great Stirrup Cay’s Pier Welcomes First Ship

Norwegian Cruise Line has officially opened a long-awaited pier at its private island destination, Great Stirrup Cay, ending years of reliance on tender operations for visiting ships.

The Norwegian Getaway became the first vessel to dock at the new pier on Dec. 28, 2025, according to the cruise line. Four Norwegian ships are scheduled to call on Great Stirrup Cay following the pier’s opening.

Previously, guests visiting the island were required to tender ashore, a process that was frequently affected by weather conditions. Rough seas occasionally forced Norwegian Cruise Line to cancel stops altogether, while nearby private destinations operated by competitors, including Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay, benefited from permanent pier access.

The new multi-berth pier is part of Norwegian Cruise Line’s broader $150 million redevelopment of Great Stirrup Cay. Planned additions scheduled for 2025 include a Welcome Plaza, Great Life Lagoon, and Splash Harbor, the company said. Further developments expected in 2026 include Great Tides Waterpark, Horizon Park, Hammock Bay, the Vibe Shore Club, and Jet Carts.

Norwegian Cruise Line said the upgrades are intended to improve guest access, reduce weather-related disruptions, and expand the range of amenities available at its private island destination.
